Making Parks Shine and People Proud: The Falkner Street Project
We’ve spent nearly 50 years navigating the streets of Merseyside. We know every shortcut, every back alley, and exactly which bin belongs where. Andrew, along with our team and a nice surprise visit from Terri (@tls0161_), decided to look beyond the bin lids and focus on the heart of the city we call home.
A Hand Up, Not Just a Handout
The idea was born from a simple, human question: How can we offer dignity alongside a paycheck?.
Andrew and Terri headed out into the freezing Liverpool air, not just with a plan, but with a bit of warmth. Thanks to a massive “shout out” to a local family who donated boxes of thermal gear, we started by making sure our neighbours on the streets were protected from the bite of a Merseyside winter.
But the real magic happened when Andrew made an offer: £20–£30 for a morning’s graft cleaning up a local park. No corporate jargon, no “leveraging synergies”, just a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.
The Falkner Street Transformation
Falkner Street Park should be a haven for local kids, but it has become a bit of a forgotten corner, buried under layers of litter and debris. By 9:00 AM the next morning, the “sceptics” were nowhere to be found. Instead, our new crew was there, suited up in Central Waste high-vis, ready to get stuck in.
It wasn’t just us, either. In a true “locals looking after locals” moment, our mates at Windmill Skips stepped up, providing the skip and removal services for free. Talk about community momentum.
The Morning’s “Graft” Stats:
- The Gear: Leaf blowers, rakes, and a lot of elbow grease.
- The Result: Years of neglect were cleared in a single session.
- The Prize: A safe, clean playground restored for the neighbourhood’s children.
More Than Just a Clean-Up
While the park looked brand new, the real stories were the ones told over the rakes. We met a man who had spent 18 years battling the toughest circumstances: homelessness and addiction, only to turn his life around, win an award for his recovery, and finally reunite with his son.
Why This Matters to Us
You might only know us for our famous orange bins, but being “Liverpool-based” is more than just a geographic tag on our office door; it’s our identity.
As Andrew puts it:
“It doesn’t matter who you are—if you do a day’s work with me, you’ve earned my respect. This is Liverpool. We come together, we look after our own, and we get the job done.”
We’re proud to be part of the fabric of this city. Whether we’re helping a local restaurant manage its food waste or helping a neighbour find their feet, we’re here for the long haul.
